Miso Furikake Butter

Compound butter is just a fancy way of adding flavor to butter. I have been noticing lately that at the grocery store, pre-packaged items like fish and meats have compound butter on top - which does equate to easy and quick meals, but also equals a higher price tag. Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have noticed (as I am sure you have as well) that food prices have skyrocketed. Although my assumption is not based on actual numbers, I can’t help but try to economize as much as possible on my grocery bill, without sacrificing quality.

You can add any flavors to the butter, and is easily made plant-based just by using vegan butter. I usually use unsalted butter, but you can use salted if that’s what you have on hand. Use your stand mixer with a paddle attachment with room temperature butter for ease or just mix by hand, which is what I did. Use this butter on top of your meats, veggies, breads, muffins, pasta, scones, the variations are endless. Stores well in the freezer for future use.

Flavor Ideas

  • Lemon Butter

  • Maple Butter

  • Cinnamon Apple

  • Garlic Herb

  • Parmasean Rosemary

  • Za’atar Spice Butter

This is just a start, the flavor variations are endless! Here is my recipe for Miso Furikake Butter:

4 tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature

1 tbsp light miso

2 tsp of furikake seasoning (this is a Japanese seasoning with light and dark sesame seeds, seaweed and salt)

Mix every thing in a bowl and taste for seasoning. Store room temperature until ready to use. I used it on a Japanese sweet potato, which is one of my favorite quick meals right now.
